Social supermarket opens in Salford
A new social supermarket has opened in Salford.
Lucie’s Pantry was opened by Salford Mayor Paul Dennett this week and aims to provide a sustainable and affordable source of food and household essentials to members of the community struggling to make ends meet through debt, illness or low income.
The facility is based at the Emmaus centre on Fitzwarren Street in Pendleton.
A social supermarket model is different to a food bank. People who want to use the not-for-profit store become members of Lucie’s Pantry, paying £2.50 per week and are able to choose items to the value of approximately £15.
Simon Locke, community director at Emmaus Salford, said: “I am really proud that Lucie’s Pantry can offer something back to the people in the surrounding community who have offered Emmaus Salford so much positive support. We truly believe we are offering great food for great people.”
Lucie’s Pantry is being run by homeless charity Emmaus Salford with support from Salix Homes, Clarion Housing Group, FareShare, Great Places, Guinness Partnership, Loaves and Fishes, Salford Citizens Advice and Salford Foodbank.
