Salix Homes takes a stand against hate crime

This week is Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week and Salix Homes is backing the campaign by urging people to report hate crime in our communities.

Hate crimes are crimes committed against someone because of their race, religion, disability, transgender identity or sexual orientation.

In the past year alone, Salix Homes has dealt with 23 hate related incidents and takes a zero tolerance stance to abuse of any kind towards people living in our communities and our workforce.

In one recent incident, we sought legal action against a tenant who hurled racist abuse towards a member of our 1st Response security team.

The tenant agreed an undertaking with the court, whereby he promised to not behave in this way again or he could face further legal action.

In another case, a tenant was hit with an Injunction Order after repeatedly hurling racist abuse at her neighbours. Under the terms of the order, she’s banned from going anywhere near their home or behaving in an abusive or threatening way towards her neighbours.

Claire Taylor, community safety manager at Salix Homes, explained: “Everybody has a right to live without fear of abuse and intimidation in their home, community and in the workplace, but unfortunately hate crime often goes unreported.

“At Salix Homes, we’re committed to ensuring that people who live in our communities, and who work for us, feel safe and welcome regardless of their race, sexuality, disability or faith and we take a zero tolerance stance towards hate crime.

“As these recent cases show, we take all reports of anti-social behaviour extremely seriously and we will not tolerate any type of abusive and violent conduct towards anyone.

“We have processes in place to deal with these sorts of incidents, but we can only take action if it’s reported to us, so we would urge people living in our communities who have been a victim of hate crime to report it to us.”

To mark Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week, we have joined our partners at For Housing and Pendleton Together to speak to Salford City Radio to raise awareness of the work we do to tackle hate crime in our communities in Salford and encourage people to report it.
