Salix Homes donates 3,000 furniture items to customers in need through recycling scheme
Thousands of items of furniture destined for landfill sites have been donated to families in need in Salford.
Salix Homes operates a successful recycling scheme for furniture that has kept 360 tonnes of furniture out of landfill sites over the past five years, and saved £70,000 in tipping costs.
The scheme aims to reuse furniture that customers donate or leave behind in our properties by providing it for free to customers who need it.
Since it launched in 2019, more than 3,000 items of furniture have been delivered to customers in need.
Jen Green, Salix Homes Director of Property, said that the scheme is an excellent way to help the community and reduce waste. “We’re thrilled to see the positive impact the scheme has had on the environment and the lives of our customers,” she said.
“We’re always looking for ways to support our community and reduce our environmental impact, and this scheme does both. By repurposing thousands of items of furniture destined for landfill sites, we’re not only providing essential support to families in need, but also significantly reducing our carbon footprint.”
The scheme is open to customers who receive benefits such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), those claiming their pension or any of our customers who may be facing financial difficulties and require support.
Customers can apply for the scheme themselves, and if they qualify, they’ll be given an appointment to visit the furniture warehouse in Salford and select what they need. Salix Homes officers can also refer customers to the scheme and will contact customers directly to discuss their needs.
Salix Homes will deliver the new furniture for a small delivery fee of £10.
The warehouse is well-stocked with good quality, clean, pre-loved furniture and homeware, including sofas, beds, tables, drawers, white goods such as fridges, freezers, and washing machines, as well as smaller items like mirrors, lamps, and ornaments to help make your home feel comfortable.
The scheme is only available to Salix Homes customers, and anyone interested in donating furniture or using this service can find out more on our website or contact environmental.maintenance@salixhomes.co.uk
