Salix Homes backs National Apprenticeship Week

Salix Homes is supporting National Apprenticeship Week.

Now in its 11th year, this annual campaign, which runs from March 5 – 9, aims to celebrate apprenticeships and raise awareness of how they benefit people, businesses, community and our economy.

Salix Homes has a successful apprenticeship programme and in the past two years alone has recruited almost 50 apprentices to work across the organisation and with our partner contractors.

Apprentice Ella Scully is currently doing an apprenticeship with our People Services Team and was last year voted Apprentice of the Year in the annual Salix Homes Employee Awards.

Ella said: “I believe apprenticeships are important as they give you a taster of the working life and give you the experience that many organisations are looking for. They also give you the chance to gain further qualifications.

“For me I believe apprenticeships help you to gain clarity on what career path you would like to go down. For anyone thinking of going down the apprenticeship route I would highly recommend it as the cost of university is at an all-time high and an apprenticeship is a great alternative. It gave me the best start to my career.”

Salix Homes has pledged to create two apprenticeship positions for every £1million spent as part of its ambitious £38million investment programme to improve 2,900 homes across Salford by 2020.

Sue Sutton, executive director of operations at Salix Homes, said: “Salix Homes is very proud to once again support National Apprenticeship Week and we hope it will encourage many more young people to consider an apprenticeship as a career path.

“We’ve had some fantastic success stories through our own apprenticeship programme; providing training and employment opportunities for local people while helping us to develop a stronger workforce.

“Apprenticeships provide a fantastic opportunity for people to gain valuable skills, experience and qualifications while still taking home a wage, and I’d encourage school-leavers, or anyone who fancies a career change, to seriously consider doing an apprenticeship.”

Salix Homes is also backing the Build Salford initiative, which has seen local organisations join forces to provide traineeships to young people interested in a career in construction.

A Build Salford Open Event takes place on Monday, March 26 at 2pm at the FutureSkills centre at Media City Salford. To find out more or to book your place, email jackie.crook@salixhomes.org
