Salford’s award-winning citizen Keri Muldoon aims to keep fighting for the community she loves
As an active supporter of Salford, few can match the enthusiasm, determination, and passion of Keri Muldoon.
From working at the Broughton Trust to supporting numerous groups in the city, Keri gives her time to organise much-needed support for food banks, fundraising, art, and drama clubs as well as being a lollipop lady.
Keri’s dedication to the community in Salford has been recognised by winning the Spirit of Salford’s ‘Citizen of the Year Award 2023’, organised by Salford City Council.
Keri, who is a Salix Homes tenant and a member of our Customer Committee, is committed to helping more people to volunteer in the community.
She recently attended a community event at Bridgewater Salford ABC, an amateur boxing club in the heart of Salford, where a sprinkling of famous faces attended including former World Boxing champion Robin Reid, British and European titlist-turned-trainer Pat Barrett, and Happy Mondays legend – Bez, all were in attendance to celebrate great work in the Salford community and congratulate Keri on her recent Citizen of the Year Award.
Bez a founding member of 90s Manchester band Happy Mondays was delighted to be there, he said:
“I’m here to show my support for the amazing work in the community, boxing, in particular, can offer youngsters the chance to learn discipline and give them confidence, all my boys were boxers in their youth, and to see so many community groups come together is brilliant.”
Keri talked about being nominated by the people of Salford:
“I didn’t even think I was going to win. I always get a bit embarrassed about it because I don’t need that recognition,” she said.
“A lot of people know the issues we face. All I want to do is bring the community together.”
Growing up and living in Broughton, Keri supports the area’s young people in particular.
She added: “A lot of the issues stem from education, teenagers especially, might not want to be educated so it’s finding that middle balance between employment and education, and finding opportunities for them to get a head start or try something different, we need to help the next generation, I’m really passionate about that.”
One thing is for sure, with her drive and determination Keri will continue to fight for the rights of the people of Salford, giving up her time and energy to help offer more opportunities to learn, grow and flourish in Salford.
