Salford landmarks brought to life at lantern parade
Some of Salford’s most famous landmarks have been brought to life in a spectacular lantern parade through the streets of Ordsall.
Crowds turned out in force for the Lighting the Legend event which this year celebrated the area’s best-loved buildings.
The iconic Salford Lads Club and Ordsall Hall were transformed into magnificent lanterns, along with some lesser-known community hubs, including Ordsall Community Café, Lindsay’s Shop and the local schools and churches.
The lanterns were carefully crafted by Ordsall Community Arts, which worked with local children to create the lanterns.
The parade, which took place on November 10, set off from Ordsall Library, before meandering down the streets and finishing up at Ordsall Park for a fireworks spectacular.
Laura Kendall, community engagement worker with Ordsall Community Arts, and one of the event organisers, said: “Lighting the Legend was a great success, and we were extremely happy with the turnout.
“We spent three days making the lanterns with more than 20 children. They all really enjoyed themselves and produced 30 beautiful lanterns for the parade.”
Salix Homes supported the event through our Springboard grant programme, which provides financial assistance to local groups and initiatives that are making a difference in Salford.
Jeanette Green, neighbourhood manager at Salix Homes, said: “The ethos of the Springboard fund is to support initiatives that strengthen the sense of community in Salford and encourage people to love their neighbourhood, so it was fantastic to see so many people out enjoying themselves at Lighting the Legend.
“This year’s event was really special as it celebrated all of the buildings that make Ordsall special. These places really are the heart of the community, and the parade through the area brought home how lucky we are to have them.”
Since launching Springboard this summer, Salix Homes has donated almost £30,0000 to local causes.
