Opening construction doors to the public

Salix Homes with regeneration specialists Galliford Try Partnerships are hosting an open day to provide a unique chance to see behind the scenes of a major “live” development.

The Open Doors event will be held at the Poet’s development, on the Beechfarm estate in Swinton, on Monday 27March (10am- 2.30pm).

Galliford Try Partnerships and Salix Homes are calling for local students of high school and college age, as well as school leavers and university graduates with an interest in a future in construction, to join them for what promises to be an interesting and informative event which could potentially lead to a new career path in construction.

This exciting development, Salix Homes’ first as a registered housing provider, will see the demolition of 146 properties, to be replaced with 161 new two, three and four bedroom homes for both rent and sale. Galiford Try Partnerships is carrying out the work on the first two of four development phases.

Visitors at the event will be given the opportunity to visit the site first-hand to get a feel for what it is like to work in the industry and Martin Sharkey, build manager and Gary Pepper, site manager for Galliford Try Partnerships, will be on hand to answer any questions about careers in construction.

Alyssa Knowles, bid coordinator for Galliford Try Partnerships, said: “Our open days are a fantastic opportunity for those interested in construction to come to site and see exactly what we do as an organisation.

“There are various career opportunities on offer in the construction sector, which many people may not even know about, so we would advise anybody who is interested to come along and ask us anything. It could spark a new career with truly excellent prospects, so it’s a great way to spend a day.”

Terry McBride, development manager at Salix Homes said: “We work closely with our partners – including Galliford Try Partnerships – in opening up educational, training and employment avenues for Salfordians. We hope many people will grasp this chance which could lead to a future in the construction industry.”
