Salix Homes backs calls for #PlanForHousing to end the housing crisis

Salix Homes is backing a national campaign calling on the next Government to end the housing crisis for good.

We stand with the National Housing Federation (NHF), which has launched its #PlanForHousing campaign ahead of the general election on July 4, calling for all political parties to prioritise housing.

England is in a housing emergency and the NHF is urging the next Government to deliver a long-term strategic plan to fix the housing crisis, starting with building 90,000 new social homes every year to meet housing need.

In Salford alone there’s 6,000 people on the housing waiting list.

As a housing association, our core purpose is to provide good quality, genuinely affordable homes for those who need them the most and we’ve committed to building 100 new homes every year, but we want to do more.

Sue Sutton, Salix Homes Chief Executive, said: “We see firsthand the impact of the housing crisis on our communities across Salford. With 6,000 people on the housing waiting list in Salford alone, it’s clear that urgent action is needed.

“We stand with the National Housing Federation in calling for a long-term plan for housing, which prioritises building more social and affordable housing.

“Our commitment to building 100 new homes every year is a step in the right direction, but we recognise the need to do more. Together, with our partners across Greater Manchester, we want to work with the next government, and play our part in ending the housing crisis.”

As part of its campaign, the NHF has set out what a long-term plan for housing could achieve by 2035:

  • End child homelessness
  • Halve overcrowding
  • Provide the security of a social home for one million more people
  • Ensure a warm and decent home for seven million more families
  • Improve affordability
  • Boost productivity by ensuring every region has the homes it needs to grow
