Helping the homeless in Salford

Salix Homes set up a pop-upsoup kitchen in Pendleton to help the homeless community.

Our Ordsall and Langworthy Neighbourhood Team provided a little comfort for those sleeping rough, as they set up the soup kitchenon the Broadwalk bySycamore Court as part of wider week of action in the community.

The initiativecoincides with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham’s new ‘A Bed for Every Night’ initiative, which aims to provide accommodation for those sleeping rough across Greater Manchester.

Our team spent the afternoon handing out more than100 cups of tea, coffee and soup to the homeless community and local residents, with Tesco generously donating 150 rolls to the cause which were gratefully received.

Jeanette Green, neighbourhood manager at Salix Homes, said: “The aim was to engage with the local homeless and rough sleeping community so they could be signposted to the right support in advance of the drop in temperatures this winter.

“We were joined by the Rough Sleeping Team who were able to offer advice about the support available, as well as theSalford NHS Healthy Lifestyles Team who were on hand to offer free blood pressure tests.

“We don’t want to see anyone sleeping on the streets so this was a great way for us to support the homeless community and let them know that help is out there.”
