Food bank boost thanks to Salix Homes' tenants

Tenants in Broughton cleared out their kitchen cupboards ahead of having new kitchens fitted as part of our multi-million pound Decent Homes improvement programme.

The food items collected were then delivered to Salford Central Foodbank at Mocha Parade in Lower Broughton and will be distributed to families on the breadline.

We are currently working alongside contractors Seddon to overhaul homes at Oakhill Court, Cheshill Court and Ascot Court in Broughton and residents receiving new kitchens were encouraged to donate any unwanted food items to the cause.

Sue Sutton, our chief executive, said: Sadly many families in Salford are struggling to put food on the table, which is why we feel it is so important to support charities like Salford Central Foodbank for the wonderful work they do.

We have seen first hand the growing reliance on food banks as people struggle with the rising cost of living, which in many cases is forcing people to make difficult decisions and go without food, so we were delighted to work alongside our contractors Seddon to support this very worthy cause.

We have been thrilled at the response from our generous tenants who have donated a mountain of food and we just hope this donation will go some way to ensure families in Salford don’t go hungry.

Our company has strong roots in Salford, and is committed to supporting food banks as they face a sharp increase in demand. Making a difference and supporting good causes in the communities where we work is part of our DNA, and we’d like to thank all of the tenants who made donations during the project.

Salford Central Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust, has been in operation since October 2012 and last year distributed more than 25,000 meals. Recent figures release by the Trussell Trust show a huge increase in people using food banks. In Salford the number of people using food banks in the past year has increased by 87 per cent.

Salix Homes is registered with the Salford Central Foodbank which means housing officers can give out food vouchers to tenants in need.
