Customer Committee

The customers monitoring and improving how Salix Homes operates

The Customer Committee is a group of Salix Homes customers with delegated powers on behalf of the Salix Homes Board. The Customer Committee review and advise on different areas of our organisation’s work such as:

  • Customer experience, with their lived experience as a customer of social housing
  • The customer voice and our engagement with customers
  • Neighbourhood planning and resident engagement
  • Customer service and complaints
  • Community and resident projects, schemes and funds

They can also arrange an in-depth review of any service we deliver to really look closely at how we work and suggest ways to improve.

For example, if they wanted to look at our repairs service, they can appoint other tenants from our ‘Scrutiny Pool’ who can ask us questions, attend meetings and review what we’re doing. They’ll then produce a report to let us know what they think we’re doing right and suggest ways we can do things better

Our Customer Committee has been involved in many different projects, including reviewing how we deal with anti-social behaviour, our sign-up process, and a review of our customer service.  Our Customer Committee also oversee the work of our Customer Groups, which are made up of tenants, who focus on key areas of the organisation to provide suggestions and feedback on service improvement.

Our Customer Committee

From time to time, we will advertise Customer Committee vacancies on our website, through social media and contacting customers.

You just then need to submit your application.

Our Customer Committee is a really diverse group – each with their own set of skills, experience and qualities – who together, make sure different viewpoints are heard and considered.

You don’t need any qualifications or a background in housing or business – you just need to be a Salix Homes customer who is enthusiastic and passionate about making a difference for people and communities in Salford.

We’ll provide all the training you need to carry out the role to the best of your abilities and there’ll be opportunities for learning new skills and developing in your role as a Committee member.

“I’ve always had an interest in volunteer work, so when the opportunity arose for me to apply to be on the new Customer Committee I jumped at the chance. I’m excited to be a contact for the area I live in and to watch the direct impact that the positive changes we make have in the community.

“I also have a personal interest in the housing sector so I’m looking forward to learning more about the industry and how not-for-profit businesses like Salix Homes run behind the scenes.”

Rashidah Owoseni

Rashidah Owoseni

A proud mother and volunteer hero, Rashidah can usually be found helping out at various charitable initiatives in Salford – everything from supporting homeless people and vulnerable children to working on projects to help improve the community.

Rashidah was living in emergency accommodation with her daughter before a friend recommended Salix Homes to her.

Unfortunately Rashidah’s daughter was rushed into intensive care due to ongoing health issues during the bidding process for a Salix Homes property. Luckily, neighbourhood officer Cheltzea was on hand to take the paperwork to Rashidah at the hospital to make sure she got her home.

“When my daughter became unwell, the kindness the local community showed me blew me away. Cheltzea from Salix Homes went above and beyond to help us get our property and I can never thank her and my local community enough for their support.

“After seeing Salix Homes advertise the Customer Committee, I just knew I had to apply. I have a passion for volunteering and helping people, but after all the help and support I received during a difficult time I wanted to do something to give back. I’m honoured to be able to the eyes and voice for my local community”.

Marta Diaz

Marta Diaz

Marta is originally from Madrid in Spain but has lived in Salford for the last five years.

After gaining a degree in communications but struggling to find viable work in Spain, Marta made the decision to move to Salford in 2015 and now works in customer services for a large online travel website.

Marta’s first home with another housing provider was on the third floor of a building and had no lift which unfortunately became an issue for her when Marta was pregnant with her first child.

After moving into a Salix Homes’ property three years ago, she has grown to love her community and is keen to give something back to the people in it.

“When I saw that Salix Homes was looking for customers to join its first ever Customer Committee, I was really interested in being involved. I love the community that I live in and I want to try and help to improve it further and support the people within it who welcomed me when I moved here from Spain.

“I’m also thankful for the opportunity the committee presents to grow personally and the experience I will gain from it”.

“I’m passionate about people and my community. I enjoy finding ways to raise funds for those who need it most and coming up with events and activities that help to bring communities closer together.

“I’m made up to be a member of the Salix Homes Customer Committee and have the opportunity to work with different types of people to come up with ideas and solutions together.”

Salix Homes Customer Committee
Play

A strong voice holding us to account and shaping our services

The Customer Committee is made up of our tenants and they’re paid for their time and insight – just the same as our Board Members.

I had no experience or background in social housing – other than living in it.

Regulations, governance, law – it was all new to me, but with the training and support from Salix Homes I’ve learnt so much and I’m really excited about the future - I hope one day I will be a Neighbourhood Officer.
