Apprentice roofer discovers the building blocks to success
To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we’re sharing our apprentice success stories.
Meet Hannah a former Nursery Nurse who embraced the challenge of learning a new trade when she joined Salix Homes on a Roof Slate and Tiling apprenticeship.
National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 10-16 February, is a celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
While in her previous role, Hannah realised she needed a change. She wanted to pursue a career that would involve working outside, more physical activity and hands on work, that’s when she decided to take on learning a new trade as an apprentice roofer at Salix Homes and our partner contractor SIMIAN.
Hannah says: “I wanted something more active. I wanted a job that would challenge me physically and mentally, and that would let me be outdoors, where I thrive.”
Learning new skills can be hard, especially as a woman in a historically male-dominated industry, but Hannah knew a practical apprenticeship would be the best way to hone her craft and learn the fundamentals of the roofing trade.
Since starting her apprenticeship with the guidance and support of Salix Homes and SIMIAN, Hannah’s skills and confidence has grown, she’s gained experience in all aspects of the roofing industry, from setting out, to formulas and mortar works.
Hannah adds: “My advice for women is to go and see if you enjoy it, you can do anything you put your mind to and to not care about what others think as you can complete any job just the same as anyone else.
“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship as it’s great to be hands-on and learn the correct knowledge. I have also gained confidence in being able to take the lead on jobs.”
Salix Homes’ Social Inclusion Manager, Jackie Crook says: “At Salix Homes, we’re passionate about giving people the chance to learn new skills and thrive. Apprenticeships are such a fantastic way to do that, and we’re incredibly proud to support young people to build rewarding careers, gain confidence, and break into new industries.
Hannah is a great example of this. She took on the challenge of a new trade and, with the support of Salix Homes and SIMIAN, has developed the skills and confidence to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her journey shows the real impact of apprenticeships – opening doors and creating new opportunities.”
