A game changing Seed Fund boost helps deliver inclusive sports programme in Salford

An inclusive sports group which provides sporting opportunities to people with disabilities has received a cash-boost from Salix Homes.

We’ve awarded £4,200 to DOSportUK to help support their work in providing disability sports and accessible physical activities for people of all ages with disabilities or learning difficulties.

The Salford Knights inclusive basketball team is part of the DOSportUK initiative, providing a fun and inclusive environment for people to play basketball, make friends and feel part of a team.

The Salford Knights play every week at Eccles College. These sessions are more than just an opportunity for exercise; they provide a safe and welcoming environment for participants to thrive physically, socially, and emotionally.

Managing Director of DOSportUK Jacob Meaton explains: “For DOSportUK’s members, these sessions are transformative. They offer more than just physical activity – they foster a sense of community and belonging.

“Participants come for various reasons, from improving their physical health to combating social isolation and finding a safe, supportive space. Thank you to Salix Homes for helping us keep doing what we do.”

The Salix Seed Fund is a funding pot of £40,000 provided through our partner contractors that has been earmarked to support ‘social value’ projects in Salford that directly benefit our customers and communities.

The funding has allowed DOSportUK to continue delivering their Salford Knights sessions with new equipment for a full 12 months, providing members with opportunities to access physical fitness, team building skills and opportunities in gaining their own coaching badge.

Mohammed, who’s sister, brother and niece all attend the session at Eccles College said: “My family have been coming to these sessions pretty much every week and I’ve seen how it has helped them progress socially. It’s great for their health and wellbeing, but it’s also been great for them to make friends and build on their skills.”

Sian Grant, Executive Director of Customers and Communities at Salix Homes, added: “The Seed Fund is focused on supporting social value projects that benefit communities across Salford, while also enhancing local initiatives that focus on inclusivity and wellbeing.

“Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in group sports in a safe and welcoming environment, so we’re incredibly proud to support DOSportUK and witness the positive impact they are making in our community.”

DOSportUK was set up eight years ago with the mission to provide every person with a disability the opportunity to participate in group sports and accessible physical activities. Today, DOSportUK runs ten community sessions every week, offering inclusive basketball and multi-sport programmes for people across Greater Manchester and Derbyshire.

The Salford Knights sessions are held at Eccles College sports hall every Tuesday from 6-8pm. To find out more visit the DOSportUK website.
