Salix Homes celebrates volunteers in Salford

Salix Homesis celebrating the work of volunteers in Salford.

We aretaking part in Volunteers’ Week – an annual event which takes place from 1 – 7 June to celebrate the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK.

To mark the occasion, we are hosting two volunteer events in Ordsall and Broughton to celebrate the crucial role its volunteers play to improve housing services in the city.

Residents interested in volunteering at Salix Homes are also invited to come along to find out more about the opportunities available.

Salix Homes enlists the help of an army of volunteers across the organisation who play a crucial role in shaping how housing services are run in Salford.

Barbara Harper, from Ordsall, is the chair of the Salix Homes Customer Senate and has been volunteering withus sincewe launched in 2007.

She said: “Volunteering with Salix Homes is a great opportunity to have a real say and make a difference to how housing services are run in Salford. When you think of volunteering, housing probably isn’t the first thing that springs to mind so I think people will be surprised at the range of opportunities on offer.

“Whether you want to develop new skills, get experience, meet new people or simply give something back to the community you’ll certainly find it rewarding.”

To mark Volunteers Week, we havealsolaunched an online interactive quiz to help residents find out which volunteer role suits them – whether people have five minutes or five hours to spare there are opportunities for everyone.

Lee Sugden, ourchief executive at Salix Homes, said: “Our customer volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation. Whether it’s helping at community events or making decisions as part of our board, their selfless commitment and love for Salford genuinely changes things for the better for our customers.

“Thanks to the transfer of homes from Salford City Council to Salix Homes earlier this year, there are now even more volunteering opportunities available and we’re currently recruiting for new customer board members so I’d encourage anyone who is interested to drop in to one of the events to find out more.”

Volunteer celebration events will take place on Wednesday, June 3 at the Meanwhile Site on Heath Avenue, Spike Island, Lower Broughton from 2.30pm to 5pm, and at Ordsall Community Café, Tatton Street from 2pm to 4pm.
