Volunteer with Salix Homes
Barbara, who has lived in Salford all her life, first started volunteering with Salix Homes (then New Prospect) in 2005 as she was passionate about improving the services in her block.
She soon realised that the issues she was having affected residents throughout the area and she wanted to make a difference to the lives of others. She continued to be involved through the years and has now joined the Salix Homes Board as a customer board member.
We asked her a few questions about what volunteering means to her.
What do you get out of volunteering?
“For me, it’s really important that I have a say and can help to improve things and make Salford a better place. At Salix Homes you feel valued and listened to, you really can make a difference. I can see the changes I’ve helped to make. As well as seeing the real results of your hard work, you also make a good network of friends and contacts.”
What are your hopes for the future of Salix Homes?
“I’d like them to continue to thrive and carry on listening to customers, and taking our views into account. One of the keys to success is customer involvement.”
What would you say to others wanting to volunteer?
“If you want to see improvements and make things better – get involved. You can pick and choose what topics you are interested in and it can just be an hour of your time – whether it’s popping along to a workshop, coming to an event in your community or taking part in a survey online.”
