Salford's 'Happy Street' raising Cash For Kids

A Salford community rocked by the Boxing Day floods is showing great charitable spirit, selflessly raising money for disadvantaged, poorly and vulnerable children across Greater Manchester.

Residents of Gordon Street, in Lower Broughton, are finalists in Key 103’s Cash For Kids Happy Street competition – where the street with the most donations wins an amazing party that will be aired on the radio station.

A hearty team of volunteers, many Salix Homes tenants, are raising as much money as possible for Cash for Kids, a charity that provides a helping hand to local youngsters in most need.

Already the group have held several fundraising events in the Broughton area, including a family bingo evening, sponsored fun run and silence.

The Cathedral School of St Peter and St John RC Primary School has also donated funds from a recent non-uniform day.

On Friday, 22 July, the community will be holding a Stocks and Stew morning on Gordon Street, with support from local businesses and contractors Seddon. Many people will take a soaking as they get put in stocks and hit by wet sponges.

Lead organiser Keri Muldoon said: “All of us in the community have been brought closer together since we were all affected by the Boxing Day floods.

“We have real community spirit and we want to raise as much money as possible for local children who are disadvantaged, vulnerable and disabled.

“We would love to also win the competition because the repairs and improvements work on our properties since the floods are almost complete – and it would be a fitting end for us to all celebrate the last, tough seven months.”

Lee Sugden, chief executive of Salix Homes, said: “We are fully behind this campaign for our customers and once again the true Salford generous and gritty spirit is shining through.

“These residents have gone through an extremely hard and heart-breaking period of their lives since the floods, but still, they show selfless actions, devoting a lot of their own time to making a difference to Greater Manchester children in most need.

“It’s not just Gordon Street residents who are getting involved, it’s large parts of the estate. A huge well done to everyone.”

The group will also be bag packing at Tesco at Salford Precinct tomorrow (Wednesday, 20 July), from 10am-4pm and at Manchester Fort, Cheetham Hill, on Sunday, July 24.
