Historic junior football club scores support

Salford’s oldest junior football club have scored the support of housing provider Salix Homes.

Barr Hill Juniors’ under tens “Clubs” team have a brand new claret and blue kit thanks to the locally-based housing association.

The historic club – which has been providing football to the community for more than 70 years – are thrilled with their new look.

Richard Butler, assistant coach, said: “The team love the new kit and it’s all down to Salix Homes.

“Without the support the players would not benefit from feeling part of a united team as they do now. All the players look fantastic and very professional in their new kit.”

The club was originally founded in 1944 towards the end of the Second World War and provided a lifeline to so many youngsters in the area after the devastation of the bombings and casualties Salford suffered.

It was originally called Pendleton Athletic and was based at St John’s CE Primary School, Irlams o’th’ Height.

Since then the club has gone from strength to strength gaining charter standard and boasting more than 20 junior and youth teams, including girls and ladies teams.

Based at Bolton Road Playing Fields, in Summerville Road, the club has also produced a number of players who have gone on to make it professionally including Terry Phelan, Roy Saunders, while local boxing champ Jamie Moore also played for the club.

Sue Sutton, executive director of operations, said: “Salix Homes is proud to support one of the most historic clubs in Salford and one that has so many connections with the areas our residents live”.

“Barr Hill Junior Football Club is a very important part of the local community, providing great facilities for young people to enjoy the beautiful game.

“We want to bring a sense of pride to our neighbourhoods and show that, where we can, we’re here to support not just our customers, but also local clubs and organisations.

“We’re glad that this sponsorship will ensure that members of the Clubs team are looking their best on the pitch.”
