New computer club will help break down digital barriers

A new computer club is being launched to help break down the digital divide in Salford.
St Clements Computer Club will open at St Clements Hall, Broughton Lane in Lower Broughton thanks to a helping hand from Salix Homes.
Organisers hope it will also help boost the confidence of users as they are able to access services and training online, which would otherwise be out of their reach.
The club, which was inspired by a similar project in Higher Broughton, has received an £800 cash boost from Salix Homes’ Springboard fund which supports projects and initiatives in Salford that boost community spirit, promote health and wellbeing, reduce isolation or improve the environment.
Fred Jones, who helped set up the club, said: “We’re very grateful to Salix Homes for helping fund the equipment. Without their help, we would not have been able to go ahead with this project.
“The club at St James in Higher Broughton has already proved successful in helping older people and vulnerable people get online. However, it isn’t easily accessible for everyone in the Broughton area. With the addition of a St Clements club, we hope to give the people of Lower Broughton an easily accessible place to get online and socialise.”
Ben Cruickshanks, neighbourhood manager for Salix Homes, added: “As an organisation we’re very pleased to be supporting such a valuable community resource. Internet access is vital in today’s digital world, and we hope it helps break down the digital divide in Salford and bring people together.”
The club is expected to open over the coming weeks.
