Salix Homes team organise duvet day donation for homeless

Salix Homes’ Environmental Services Team have once again helped to spread some Christmas cheer, by donating duvets to a local church to support the homeless community.

Recycling coordinator Janine Hart organised the donation drive, which she dubbed ‘Duvet Day’. She said: “As the nights were getting darker and colder, I thought about what we could do to help those who may be struggling to keep warm this year, particularly the homeless community.

“Our Furniture Recycling Team supports people that have fallen on hard times, and so we know what it’s like for people who have nothing.”

After collecting the duvet donations, Janine contacted Helen Wyatt at St. Paul with Christ Church on the Boardwalk in Pendleton.

Helen said: “This donation is just wonderful and we’re very grateful. Our church runs a homeless-outreach programme, which offers food parcels to people who are homeless or in dire poverty. We also offer support for asylum seekers through donations of home furnishings or anything that will help them to set up a new home.

“At this time of year, kind-hearted locals often approach us, as they’d like to offer somewhere warm for homeless or displaced people to stay, but tell us that they might not have a spare duvet for them, so these will come in really useful and we’d like to say a big thank you to the Salix Homes staff who donated.”

Sian Grant, executive director of operations at Salix Homes, added: “Our Environmental Services Team is no stranger to charitable acts. Last year, instead of having a Secret Santa, they decided to collect toys for local children in need through the Little Hulton Toy Appeal.

“We’re really proud of the team for once again showing their generosity and thinking of imaginative ways to help people who might be struggling in our communities.”

The Environmental Services Team work in our neighbourhoods across Salford to ensure the environment around customers’ homes is clean, tidy and an attractive place to live.
